Most people are lucky to work with Madonna once. Costume designer Arianne Phillips has lasted 11 years, from the singer's Pre-Raphaelite look for "Ray of Light" to the urban cowgirl of "Music" to the Patty Hearst look of "American Life" and on and on and on. In other words, measured in Madonna time, Phillips is roughly 77 years old.
Still, La Ciccone's upcoming "Sticky and Sweet" tour has had its own unique challenges for her longtime stylist. "Normally we prep in April and May, and open in June," says Phillips. "This time, the tour begins in August. It's a nightmare. Everyone in Italy and France is on a beach sunning themselves."
Thankfully, everyone is a bit of an exaggeration, as Phillips goes on to detail a mile-long list of willing collaborators and everything they've designed for the trek, which begins Aug. 23 in Cardiff, Wales, and comes to the United States in early October. Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci designed two outfits, while Tom Ford provided bespoke suits for the band. Three pairs of shoes have been custom-made by Miu Miu, there are thigh-high boots courtesy of Stella McCartney, sunglasses from Moschino, and other outfits and odds and ends from Yves Saint Laurent, Roberto Cavalli, and Jeremy Scott.
As in the past, this tour will be divided into four sections. The first references gangsta pimp and Art Deco with Givenchy costumes. This, it would seem, is Madonna's current take on her longest-running fashion inspiration - the dominatrix. "It's a theme that runs throughout her career" Phillips says. "She's not afraid of being hard." The second section has been termed "Old School," and harkens back to Madonna's early days in New York, with Scott's outfit and some vintage prints from Keith Haring, the late graffiti artist and friend of Madonna who died of AIDS in 1990. "He and Madonna were friends. If he were alive, it would be his 50th birthday as well. So I thought, 'What if we revisited that?'" Afterward, there's a gypsy section with more costumes from Givenchy. "Riccardo's a new young talent. If you look at Madonna's history with fashion, that makes him an obvious choice." Finally, there's a futuristic rave section with lots of Japanese influences.
And while The New York Times complained recently about Madonna's style choices, Phillips says getting older has had little effect on her sense of fashion adventure. "She always wants to push the envelope. There are no vanity considerations based on her age." As Phillips adds seconds later, "She looks good in everything."

4M moves down one place to #31 in its 20th week on the Australian airplay chart.
GI2M finally starts gaining some ground, moving from 58 to 46 in its 7th week. It's also reached a new peak of #30 at iTunes as of today. With airplay increasing, sales should follow, so it may stick around for a while (it moved up one place to #25 last week in its 3rd week on the combined singles sales chart).

Full trajectories below. "Hard Candy" falls to No. 110 on the Billboard 200 after 14 weeks in the top 100. "4 Minutes" is removed from the Billboard Hot 100 and Pop 100 after 20 weeks on both charts (songs that have fallen outside the top 50 after 20 or more weeks on the chart are no longer eligible to chart). "4 Minutes" refuses to give up its spot on Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks, moving 40-39 in its 20th week on that chart. "Give It 2 Me" gets a boost on the Hot Singles Sales and Hot Dance Singles Sales charts from the release of the physical maxi-single, but not enough to help it regain a bullet on the Pop 100. It also regains some momentum on the Canadian charts.

Separation in 2003?
Jim Simpson<jim (at) monkey.org>

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,404302,00.html
Madonna - who turns 50 on Saturday - and Guy Ritchie separated in 2003 for a short time, according to British author Wendy Leigh. It was a bombshell that she left out of the bestseller she wrote with Christopher Ciccone, "Life With My Sister Madonna."
Wendy, you see, took umbrage at an item that appeared here a few days ago about sales of "Life with My Sister." She pointed out that the book had sold more than the 35,000 copies Nielsen Bookscan had counted and, in fact, still was on the bestseller list after less than a month.
While we talked over breakfast on Thursday at a downtown hotel, Wendy told me the whole saga of how she and Madonna's brother had come to be partnered on the book, and then she dropped this bombshell.
Madonna, she told me, had written many letters and e-mails to Christopher over the years. The latest was in 2003. "She detailed her marriage to Guy in a way that a woman usually doesn't discuss her husband with her brother," Wendy told me.
"It showed a side of her that made her very human," Leigh said. "But think that this was so soon in the marriage. She was having grave doubts. But so was he. The separation was initiated by him."
The letters are only briefly mentioned in the book, Wendy said, because it's illegal to quote from them. Even paraphrasing is tricky. But the gist of it is that Christopher was Madonna's confidant as recently as 2003.
The separation came in February 2003, less than three years into the marriage and birth of their son, Rocco. According to Leigh, the couple went for "counseling." It's unclear whether this meant Kabbalah or just regular shrink stuff.
In any case, the marriage continues. At the time, Leigh said, "Madonna had serious reservations" about the marriage and about Guy and expressed them to Christopher in the letter. There were details about Guy's past and Madonna's insecurities. The letter took my breath away. It showed me how bright she was and the woman behind the Madonna-constructed image."
Ciccone apparently has a huge cache of letters and cards, all decorated and designed by Madonna, that are securely hidden in a safe deposit box. When Ciccone showed Leigh the letters, she was convinced of the siblings' closeness.
Leigh told me how this book project began, lest I think Madonna had anything to do with it (you never know what the Material Madge might do for publicity). She says that Ciccone approached her over a year ago in Miami about writing a memoir but didn't know if anyone would be interested. (We have to suspend disbelief here.)
What followed was a series of cloak-and-dagger sessions at Leigh's Key Biscayne home, with Ciccone arriving in disguises and using code names. (He was "Mr. Blake" after a famous English spy.)
Ciccone cancelled the first meeting because it fell on Madonna's birthday. "He said, 'No, I can't do it today,'" Leigh recalled. "He was extremely nervous."
Several times, Ciccone became very upset during the writing process. One instance was when he and Leigh watched Madonna rolling around on their mother's grave in her documentary "Truth or Dare."
The pair delivered a proposal to her agent, and an auction among publishing houses followed in New York. Publishers, she said, came to a loft Leigh rented downtown and met Ciccone behind a curtain. They were given a list of 100 reasons this book was different than past Madonna biographies. Simon & Schuster's Spotlight Entertainment division won.
Through all of it, Madonna never found out a book was coming until a month before publication - and that only happened because Ciccone asked his father for pictures. That would have been around June 12. Leigh said a flurry of phone calls followed from Madonna, which Christopher ignored.
I did ask the attractive, chipper Leigh, author of many celebrity bestsellers, about Ciccone's betrayal of his sister. It seems to me that it's caused a permanent rift between the formerly close siblings.
"What if your brother did this to you?" I asked Leigh, hypothetically. There was a long pause. "I can't say," she answered. "I can't guess."
"Does he not care about the future of their relationship?" I asked.
Leigh said, "Until the end, the whole thing didn't seem real to him. He didn't think anyone would be interested; he didn't think we'd get a publisher. I don't think he thought that far ahead."
She paused. "I do think he has more stories to tell."
Madonna turning 50 with world tour on her mind
Chris Bigham<thebigham69 (at) yahoo.com>
Thu August 14, 2008 8:08 AM
LONDON (Reuters) - Madonna won't have much time to fret about turning 50.
While many people passing the milestone may prefer to pause and reflect, the "queen of pop" is in the midst of final preparations for her world tour which kicks off in Cardiff, Wales, on August 23, a week after her birthday.
If previous shows are anything to go by, the 40-plus "Sticky & Sweet" dates around the globe will put Madonna under the kind of physical and mental strain that would test a woman half her age.
But the world's most successful female recording artist has never let age, sex or background get in her way, and has remained in the ascendancy with an uncanny ability to reinvent herself just when the old Madonna was nearing her sell-by date.
Her latest reincarnation is a shrewd businesswoman, after she severed ties with long-term record label Warner Brothers to sign up with Live Nation, a company that until recently specialized in music tours.
As well as earning a reported $120 million over the life of the agreement, Madonna appeared to be among the first to recognize which way the music industry was heading.
Recorded music, many artists now believe, is making them less money than live performing, meaning they are looking to spend less time in the recording studio and more on the stage.
The last few years have not all been easy for Madonna, however.
A celebrity who often bristles in the media glare, Madonna may be universally admired but she is not universally loved.
Her decision in 2006 to adopt a young Malawian boy whose mother died was controversial both in the southern African country and further afield.
Aid groups in Malawi said the authorities had bent the rules to accommodate the super-star, and the adoption was challenged in court. Not for the first time, Madonna prevailed and the adoption went through.
Madonna has two other children -- son Rocco with her husband the British film director Guy Ritchie, and daughter Lourdes from a previous relationship.
She directed her first feature film that came out in 2008, and although reviews were mixed, there were harsh words for a woman some feel should forget about movies and stick to music.
Her eight-year marriage to Ritchie has also come under increasing scrutiny after tabloid newspapers in Britain, where she spends much of her time, have reported that the couple are planning to divorce.
Both Ritchie and Madonna have denied the reports.
At 50, has Madonna surpassed the Beatles?

A quarter century after she emerged, the icon's allure is still in full effect By Tony Sclafani, MSNBC contributor
There's no easy way to say this, so I'll just come right out with it. As Madonna's 50th birthday approaches on Aug. 16, it's looking like her influence on pop music has outshone that of the Beatles.
Let me qualify the above statement before all the peace-and-love baby boomers start hating. It's Madonna's impact on the course of pop music that bests the Fab Four, not her sociological importance, songwriting skills or recording innovations. Influence means an artist has an effect on the future direction of music. While the Beatles influenced scads of artists in their time, after their breakup, their sound became yesterday's news. Artists that tried to copy them (Badfinger, the Raspberries, Squeeze) seemed quaint or quirky.
But a quarter century after Madonna emerged, artists still use her ideas and seem modern and edgy doing so. Beyond the obvious Madonna wannabe 1980s singers, Madonna's influence is felt in artists from Gwen Stefani to Britney Spears to boy bands, who found in the 1990s there was an audience beyond the old rock crowd. Madonna, like Elvis, recast the focus of popular music. By emphasizing modern R&B grooves where most singers used rock beats, she was the catalyst that changed music from being rock-centric to being dance and R&B-oriented. (Disco, which influenced Madonna, might have done the same thing had it not died because of rock resentment. It's worth noting that before Madonna, most music mega-stars were guy rockers; after her, almost all would be female singers.
Combining genres, inventing styles
How did this happen? Let's scroll back to 1983, the year of Madonna's first album. Like Elvis and the Beatles, Madonna combined genres. So her first two singles ("Everybody" and "Burning Up") may have been lost on people because of the way they didn't quite fit in with R&B or rock. Top 40 and MTV back then treated black music like a subgenre - not the backbone of 20th century American music, as it's recognized now. With her music and videos, Madonna sliced away at genre straightjackets like a surgeon, opening the doors for the future hip-hop explosion. As for style, well, Madonna's rag-tag early clothing get-up much of what was to come in the 1980s. She was also perhaps the ultimate video pioneer, because her videos were integral to her presentation, not an appendage of it. Her career highlights came early on. She famously rolled around on the stage singing "Like a Virgin" in a wedding dress at the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards. She had a featured role in "Desperately Seeking Susan" and got a huge hit out of that with "Into the Groove." She topped the charts with "Crazy for You," which wasn't even on one of her albums. Forbes recently dubbed her the richest woman in music. The Billboard Book of Top 100 Hits accomplishments, check Wikipedia or Madonnalicious..)
Women's work
The word "female" is significant in that assessment of Madonna because she presented herself in a fresh way for women artists. She didn't try to be one of the boys, but she wasn't a girly-girl or a singer-songwriter.
When the Beatles hit America, they changed the paradigm of performer from solo act to band. Madonna changed it back - with an emphasis on the female. With female artists everywhere these days, it's easy to forget how revolutionary her success was (historically challenged Millennials especially seem not to realize this). But look at old music magazines or Billboard charts for proof that in the pre-Madonna era, women were the aberration, not the norm.
Madonna's countless hit records opened people's minds as to how successful a female artist could be. Nineties artists such as Tori Amos and Bikini Kill have zilch in common with Madonna, but benefited from her opening the ears of teen-female pop fans to something other than the usual heavy metal shouters (trust me, teen girls in the 1980s loved that stuff).
Her early audience was the recipient of some panic-stricken journalism early on, much of which took the tone of: "Madonna's come to ruin your daughters!! Arghghgh!" The consensus then was that Madonna probably wouldn't have the longevity of Cyndi Lauper (who immediately preceded her) and would disappear like other recent suggestive singers (remember Dale Bozzio? Terri Nunn?).
But Madonna also had the Beatles-like tendency to anticipate the maturing of her audience and also the ability to reinvent her style. Her personal life became fodder for 1989's "Like a Prayer," just when her audience was looking beyond dance music. When Gen X grew more mature, she told erotic "Bedtime Stories" and unleashed her "Sex" book on the world.
Still in vogue
Madonna's no-holds-barred example broadened the palette of what artists - especially female artists - could attempt. Liberate yourself, Madonna seemed to say, and the rest will follow. When her popularity didn't fade, as predicted, people - especially skeptical Boomer critics - were forced to take her seriously. Madonna was also responsible for throwing off some of the unconscious modesty of pop music. Peripheral artists had attempted this, but Madonna was unique in that she brought a no-apologies approach to sex to her music. As she sung in "Burning Up:" "Unlike the others, I'd do anything / I'm not the same, I have no shame." She could be calculating one minute and coy the next. Her concert tours, like 1992s "Girlie Show," brought this to the fore, blurring sexuality, satire and social commentary.
The late rock critic Lester Bangs observed in 1975 the Beatles' jangly sound and somewhat naive worldview was unable to transcend its 1960s origins. Bangs never gave the band enough credit for their songs, but he was right that some of their continuing appeal was fueled by hippie era nostalgia. That's still the case. It's hard to get nostalgic about Madonna, though, because her influence stayed current. Not bad for someone who is about to hit the half-century mark.

This Saturday, August 16th, the greatest icon and biggest hitmaker of our time, Madonna, turns 50 years young.
We wish her lots of love and light.
In celebration of this very special milestone, we present to you Like An Angel Passing Through My Room, a very rare Madonna song, produced by William Orbit during their Ray of Light sessions, which JUST leaked.
It's such a pretty pretty ballad, almost a lullaby.
Enjoy!
Update: This is an Abba cover, we've just learned.
We love it even more now!

THE ANNIE LENNOX COLLECTION paints a vivid portrait in song of the most long standingly successful female British artist in pop music history. Available September 15th from RCA Label Group / SonyBMG, this 14-song retrospective brings together the acclaimed artist's finest solo work on a single disc for the first time, and includes a pair of new songs available exclusively with this release.
Spanning 15 years, The Annie Lennox Collection includes hits from her four top-selling solo albums Diva (1992), Medusa (1995), Bare (2003) and last year's highly praised Songs of Mass Destruction. The timeless music selected for this collection uniquely reflects the essence of the singer's instantly recognizable brand of soul music on tracks like "Why," "Walking on Broken Glass" and "No More 'I Love You's'" - a song that earned Lennox one of her four Grammys. "It seems like the time has come to release the Collection this year," says Lennox of the best-of set. "The songs are timeless, and have become "classics" in their own right." Indeed, Annie Lennox is a peerless singer, writer and performer who has channelled her personal joys and sorrows into her songs to create true soul music. In turn, her songs help form the soundtrack of our collective lives. The retrospective also includes two new songs recorded especially for this collection. Offering the instant Annie Lennox classic tag is "Pattern Of My Life", written by Tom Chaplin the front man of multi award winning UK Rock band Keane. The second new track is a cover of Irish alt-rock group Ash's "Shining Light', which picked up the 2001 Ivor Novello best Contemporary Song Award and the Irish Music best Single Award the following year. Among the many highlights on The Annie Lennox Collection is "Sing," a song that references The SING Campaign, a humanitarian organization Lennox founded to raise awareness and support for the AIDS/HIV pandemic in Africa. "We're still in the early stages, but this is a lifelong commitment on my part," Lennox says. "I'm coming out from behind my singing voice to express myself in broader terms and help give a voice and lend support to those who don't have the same opportunities as I do."
